Any proper romantic knight would move Heaven and Hell to help such an accursed brother in such a wretched state.Īnd I'm forgetting scenario names, again, but there is an extended adventure, originally in the PERILOUS FOREST sourcebook I believe, that has the knights quest to solve the riddle of the Bower of Thorns. I've always been partial to "The Adventure of the Best Wine in the World." And my memory is currently playing tricks on me, but if it is not the same adventure, look for the one that begins with the knight errant PCs coming across one of my single favorite tragic character hooks for a storyline: they are challenged to a duel by a knight who admits to them that he is cursed to challenge all who must cross his bridge, and that every time he loses he loses another memory of his true love. I don't know if it can be easily done in three sessions, though. I slightly prefer the Circle of Gold adventure, but that's because I love the whole antiquated quest feeling of it. The other classic first edition adventures ("Tournament of Dreams" and "Circle of Gold") are also quite good.

It has famous dudes in the side wings, faerie, Morgan, magic goodies, plenty of Trait rolls. "The Grey Knight" is by the same guy who gave us the mega-classic MASKS OF NYARLATHOTEP, and it's of the same quality. But "The Heart Blade" is tough to do in only three sessions. I get to the scene where the king finally realizes that his "son" has been playnig him for a fool, and removes his crown, and the mercenaries are waiting down in the woods below, and I just put it down and wish I had a Pendragon campaign again. Personally, "The Heart Blade" is still one of the few adventures that moves me to chills every time I read it. It's tough to recommend just one adventure, because I don't know what your playgroup is like, or how much experience they have with the game. Reading and pondering the adventures works well, but just picking the first one you come across seems to work just as well. You can pretty near guarantee a good choice no matter what your method of selection or criteria are. Picking the best Pendragon adventures, much like picking the best of any long-running Chaosium product, is pretty much a glorious accident of futility. Scorpio with moths flying out of his wallet. Or should I just wait till my tax return gets here and drop the $140 to aquire all the outstanding Pendragon products.?

Do any Pendragon vets have any recommendations of what the cream of this crop might be? There are a bunch of different books out there for the game, including three collected volumes of older stuff - Tales of Legendary Tournaments, Tales of Chivalry and Romance and Tales of the Spectre Kings. Something that would take 3-5 sessions and allow me to really get the mojo on. I would like to run just one unbelievably amazing Pendragon adventure. The honest truth is that with 7th Sea, Dragon Lords (about to become either HeroQuest or TRoS) and Ars Magica all in play right now, and my friend Rob's Wraith game scheduled for the summer, there's just not going to be space for the kind of epic campaign Pendragon demands.īut. That said, all the use I'm likely to be able to get out of this thing right now is to strip-mine it for the (pseudo-Arthurian) Avalon setting of my 7th Sea game, about to kick into its second year. I'm particularly impressed by the way they've attempted to run the gamut of source material, with mention being made of a whole bunch of personal faves, including The Mabinogion, The Once And Future King and, of course, fan fave Thomas Mallory. The main Pendragon book (4th ed) is a 350 page bad-boy containing a welter of Arthurian material. (Back when WD was still in the double-digit issues and still carried material across the entire gaming industry.) I have lusted for this game since reading stat blocks in an old White Dwarf magazine, aged 14.

Even though Amazon still hasn't delivered unto me my Abyssals book yet (grrrrrrrrr) my other secret weapon finally turned up in the mail last night - the King Arthur Pendragon RPG and the campaign pack The Boy King.
